Return on Investment Case Study…
Best Western Manchester South
The Best Western Manchester South is part of the Sure Collection of hotels, a group of hotels focused on providing a simple and reliable service that is real value for money. This means that this is a popular hotel, often at full occupancy. One challenge of surveying and installing this site was its full occupancy, it meant that we needed to be careful with the scheduling of our initial survey aswell as our installation to ensure minimal to no disruption to guests. Despite this timing challenge, this project was installed over 10 days and did not require re-visits, as such it was completed in one phase. Another challenge we encountered during this project was the need for adjustments during the installation process. We needed to adjust fittings to retain the decorative feel of the hotel. Both challenges were easy to overcome by our experienced and agile projects team, leading to project success with limited impact on project timelines.

Spotlight On…
Bedrooms
Unlike other hotels with standardised bedroom designs, Best Western Manchester South has varied designs in their 116 bedrooms. This meant that attention to detail during our on-site survey was essential so that we supplied the correct number and type of lights and fittings. In the bedrooms we replaced 11W ES compact fluorescent candles with the Sylvania 5W LED Candle ES. We also replaced 36W PLL lamps with the 18W Osram LED PLL lamp, these lamps required rewiring as our client was keen to continue to use their existing ballast with these lamps. This highlights our ability to be flexible during our project management process to accommodate specific client requirements. We also switched 40W ES incandescent golf balls to the Osram LED 5W Golf ball, 35W MR16s with the Philips Corepro 3.5W GU10 alongside the Integral Evo Fire downlight and finally 28W 2D compact fluorescent round fittings with the Ansell Disco 12 LED Downlight. All of this, just in the bedrooms!
The Products
The products throughout this project were varied due to our clients’ requirements to upgrade both internal and external lighting. We replaced a mixture of 35W halogen GU10 and MR16s with the Philips Corepro 3.5W GU10 alongside the Integral Evo Fire Downlight, 15W ES compact fluorescent spirals with the Integral 8.6W ES LED GLS, 6ft and 5ft T8 fluorescent battens with the Ansell Tornado 6ft and 5ft LED batten, 28W 2D round compact fluorescent fittings with the Ansell Disco 12W Bulkhead. In carparks we replaced 300W Son Floodlights with the Philips Ledinare 30W LED Floodlight and finally we replaced 18W 2 Pin fittings where their emergency function was not working with the Kosnic Ossa Bulkhead with a chrome bezel to match the decor of the hotel and with corridor and emergency function. This was a great improvement as previously our clients were not able to use the emergency function in these fittings.

The Bottom Line…
Small Changes, Big Impact
Despite several hiccups during the installation process, this project was completed successfully. Not only was the project a great success but the benefits of this case study speak for themselves. With an extremely low payback of investment at 1.26 years and an annual energy saving cost of £31,924.53, our clients at Best Western Manchester can appreicate huge cost savings whilst making their hotel more energy efficient and suitable through their lighting.
