D&D Restaurants

German Gymnasium

The German Gymnasium restaurant is a historic site, built in 1861, it was the first purpose-built gym in the UK and later was home to the indoor events in the 1866 Olympic games. Now the restaurant, located in between Kings Cross and St. Pancras is a beautiful upscale bar and restaurant. It’s chic interior is complimented by remnants of its past uses so it was important that the LED lighting upgrade enhanced these features and the overall impact of this historic building. We replaced lighting and fittings in the bar, upstairs restaurant, pillar lights and wall lights aswell as the floor lighting. We are proud to work with the illustrious D&D restaurants.

Spotlight On…

Bar & Upstairs

An essential aspect to lighting the key areas of this building was ensuring that lighting was dimmable. We replaced dimmable halogen 35W MR16s with the dimmable Soraa 7.5W GU10 LED. This lamp was specifically chosen by our clients at German Gymnasium to align with the lighting in other D&D sites. We supplied this alongside the Tri Black Downlight fitting to ensure that the new lighting functioned properly in the fitting. Upstairs we replaced 50W halogen AR111s with the Soraa LED AR111 alongside the Soraa Snap lens. This lens is a magnetic and interchangeable accessory that allows you to modify the beam angle and colour output of the lights. This is a great product and meant that our clients could adjust their lighting to match their required aesthetic without the need for tools and complicated fixings. These lighting choices in these key areas meant lighting could continue to have a huge impact on the ambience of the restaurant and showcase the way in which our projects team can cater to specific requirements of our clients.

The Products

As our clients had very specific lighting products in mind, we were careful to ensure that lighting was consistent across the site. This meant that we used a small selection of products but installed these across the site. We replaced 35W MR16 halogens with the Soraa 7.5W GU10, 50W halogen AR111s with the Soraa 18.5W LED AR111, 28W capsules with the more decorative filament Zico 4W Clear SES candle and finally 35W MR11 halogens with the Philips 2.3W LED MR11 alongside the Varilight low voltage transformer. All the lamps supplied in this project were dimmable and a key part of this project was to ensure that lights dimmed fully and without flickering.

The Bottom Line…

Small Changes, Big Impact

The lighting upgrade at the German Gymnasium restaurant not only preserved the building’s historic charm but also significantly enhanced its ambiance. By replacing outdated halogen lights with energy-efficient, dimmable LED alternatives, we achieved a remarkable 0.87 year payback period. This swift return on investment underscores our commitment to quality and efficiency, delivering a solution that balances aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability in this iconic venue.
