Return on Investment Case Study…
Crowne Plaza Nottingham
The Crowne Plaza Nottingham is a stunning hotel right in the heart of Nottingham city centre. This hotel is very popular with business guests due to its extensive meeting spaces which can accommodate many so it was vital to make sure that the style and appearance of these areas would elevate guest experience and create consistent illumination. We were requested to complete this project at the request of the Valor hospitality group, who are aiming to achieve 100% LED lighting in all their sites in Europe by the end of 2024.
During this project, our expertise really came into its own as we were faced with various setbacks to conquer. One issue we overcame was that the existing Ilight dimming systems were not compatible with the new LED lighting. We installed new dimmer backs to ensure that the LED lighting could be used to its full dimming potential. This is a common issue that is essential to solve so that the full capability of LED lighting can be achieved.
We also encountered a minor hiccup during the installation stage of this project. Some of the original downlights had a smaller cut out size than the cut-out size required for the replacement which was to fit a larger downlight. No matter! To solve this, we supplied converter rings alongside the Ansell Prism fitting to ensure that the impact on decoration was as minimal as possible.

Whilst we can mitigate most issues before and during installation, at times we face unavoidable obstacles such as suppliers not having enough stock. Unfortunately, this did occur during this project, but we solved this innovatively and efficiently so that there was no need for extra products to be purchased. Our smooth handling of this issue meant the project’s overall progress was unaffected.
The vast size of the Crowne Plaza Nottingham meant that this project was extensive and led to various hiccups along the way, but this was in no way too much of a challenge for our project team! This project is currently in its latter phases, not yet completed. More on to follow in the coming months….

Spotlight On…
The Royal Suite
The Royal Suite was a focal point of this project, where our clients were keen on improving the entrance area, corridor and bar area of this suite. This area had a range of products in use that required replacement including halogen MR16s, compact fluorescent downlights. Thus, it was important that these included certain functions and accessories such as dimmability, emergency and PIR sensors. In the Royal Suite, we replaced approximately 330 MR16s with lower wattage Philips Master Value LED 4.6W or 3.7W GU10 (depending on the original wattage) alongside the Integral EvoFire fitting. These lamps were installed in a warm white colour to maintain a welcoming and warm ambience in these areas, to provide maximum comfort for guests.
The Products
As mentioned, this project included the replacement of a range of different lighting. We replaced 26W compact fluorescents with the Ansell Anzo LED Downlight. We also switched fittings where there were 2 x 70W T8 fluorescent battens with the Ansell Pace Backlit Panel to increase lighting uniformity and quality. We also replaced 5FT 58W Battens with the Ansell Tornado LED Batten, with emergency functionality.

The Bottom Line…
Small Changes, Big Impact
The Crowne Plaza Nottingham underwent a lighting upgrade project which enhanced the illumination in the hotel with energy efficient LED solutions. By replacing the lighting fixtures with modern LED technology, included integrated sensors and dimmable options, the hotel achieved significant energy savings which translates to impressive cost savings per year. With a rapid return on investment, the project not only improves guest experience but also demonstrates the hotel’s commitment to becoming greener through their lighting.
